Typically, this occurs when a person is hit from behind, such as in an automobile accident, causing the neck to go forward flexion and back extension. Whiplash can disrupt ligaments and irritate the joints in the cervical spine.

Occasionally known as torticollis, Cervical Dystonia is painful spasms of the neck that resulted in neck twisting. Frequently, the cause may not be found.
